SCENARIOS — The European Union defines our present moment in history a ‘period of opportunities and challenges’. This statement was the starting point for “SCENARIOS”, an investigation into the role and imagined future of the European Union by photographer Esther Hovers. She takes us ahead to the year 2035: the European Union has been replaced by a federal state. The refugee crisis, the financial crisis and the climate crisis have left their marks on the political landscape of Europe and, in the last 20 years, have caused drastic changes to the collaboration between the EU member states.
In her spatial installation, Hovers brings several strategies together. Using archive materials, drawings and photography, she pulls the viewer into an intriguing and speculative examination of an institution that was once founded to encourage brotherhood between the European citizens, now and in the future.
Esther Hovers graduated from the Photography department of the Royal Academy of Art The Hague in 2015.
